Essence: The Suburban Street

Essence is an exhibition which reimagines our experience of the suburban street through two distinct senses – touch and sight, in installation, projection and wall-works. Located at Sunshine Art Space, Melbourne, the project encourages a connection to locality through an installation intended to ‘ground’ the participant, as they feel their way over the texture of surfaces of the urban environment of Brimbank through their unobstructed feet.

The visual projection reimagines local advertising as a poetic representation of the personal behind the store façade, behind the economic. It is both a visual identity of the municipality and an extension of the owner/occupant’s own identity speaking to the street, the world, influencing and influenced by the broader cultural fabric.

Essence was made and recorded during the pandemic and act as a record of the time and fluctuation.
